Grand Traverse
The Grand Traverse region has long been a destination for tourists. Around the turn of the 20th century, travelers arrived by steamship or horse and carriage; these days most arrive by automobile although Cherry Capital Airport is conveniently located (only two miles from Traverse City) for those who fly in.
The natural beauty of the area, including the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, area beaches, rolling hills, forests and the spectacular Grand Traverse Bay have drawn people here from around the world. Numerous outdoor activities, such as boating, fishing, swimming, hiking and golfing are readily available.
Downtown Traverse City, as well as the smaller towns sprinkled through-out the area, provide a vast array of restaurants as well as entertainment and interesting shops, many featuring local artists’ works. Wineries and microbreweries offer opportunities to taste beverages made from local products surrounded by beautiful scenery.
A special cultural draw worth noting is the Interlochen Arts Academy which offers many performances all year ‘round. Northwestern Michigan College is home to the Dennos Museum houses art exhibits as well as performances.
The region offers attractions and special events through-out the year. Of special note are the Cherry Festival and Traverse City Film Festival, both held in the summer.
